This week, we have a question from a kid! Nick Driver asked what exactly sundogs are and how they form.
That's likely a phrase that many haven't heard before. Well, as you may have inferred from context clues...it all starts with the sun. When the upper atmosphere gets especially cold, because it is so far from the heat source, aka the surface, the water freezes, but not just in a circular ice shape, in a hexagonal shape.
As a result, the sunlight is bent, but here's the thing, it's bent at exactly 22 degrees as it passes through the crystal and to our eyes.
This bending leads to an optical illusion called a sundog.
