Huntsville Police confirm they are investigating the death of a 4-year-old who suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

At this time, police say the shooting appears to be accidental, but charges could be filed.

Don Webster with HEMSI confirmed the shooting took place at Highland Pointe Apartments on Ryan Road in Huntsville about 7:25 a.m. Sunday.

Madison County Coroner Dr. Tyler Berryhill says the child was transported to Huntsville Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8 a.m.

Berryhill says an autopsy has been ordered and will be performed this week.

The Community Manager at Highland Pointe Apartments, Lisa Curnel, says their main concern is their residents' safety. She says they are helping police with their investigation.
