The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate.

The 49-year-old inmate, whose name has not been released, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Madison County Jail about 6:30 p.m. Monday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Huntsville Emergency Medical Services Inc. took him to Huntsville Hospital. The man died there about 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The man was booked into the jail Friday on a criminal mischief charge.

The sheriff’s office’s news release on the death said it appears the man “attempted to take his own life through asphyxia by using a bedsheet. Preliminary findings indicate the manner of suicide.”

The sheriff’s office is investigating the death. Also, the Alabama Department of Forensic Science will perform an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
