Investigation underway after inmate found dead at Madison County Jail

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate.

The 49-year-old inmate, whose name has not been released, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Madison County Jail about 6:30 p.m. Monday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Huntsville Emergency Medical Services Inc. took him to Huntsville Hospital. The man died there about 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The man was booked into the jail Friday on a criminal mischief charge.

The sheriff’s office’s news release on the death said it appears the man “attempted to take his own life through asphyxia by using a bedsheet. Preliminary findings indicate the manner of suicide.â€

The sheriff’s office is investigating the death. Also, the Alabama Department of Forensic Science will perform an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
